M Blitz

project 10 of 12

Collaborative project with Indhira Rojas, Brice McGowan and Matthew Heigl.

Group project as part of Project M Blitz at CCA where we took design outside of the classroom with the goal of interacting with people beyond people in our design program. Our group decided to tackle the waste stream at CCA. Over the course of one week we worked to figure out a way to capture the amount of waste CCA was generating over a controlled period of time.

We discovered in the course of our investigation that while all of CCA's waste stream was currently going into a landfill, they were in the process of converting to the three bin waste system. With this in mind, we opted to raise awareness about the amount of waste we were creating as a school. Additionally, we were able to use the opportunity to inform students of the change in waste management that was soon coming to CCA. What resulted was an organized pile of trash, collected and sorted over the course of a Sunday night, which included waste that had been generated over the weekend. We organized the waste stream by type, in an effort to highlight specific items that are prevalent in our waste stream (e.g.. paper towels, coffee cups, lids, plastic bottles). This installation was up for three days in front of the main entrance to the school.

Installation featuring the trash generated at CCA over the course of one weekend.
The installation proved a great way to interact with the student body to get their thoughts on recycling and conservation efforts at CCA.
